Portis in Arkansas

One of our splendid interns here used to work for the Oxford American, that excellent journal, so we are happy to give them this little shout-out. And if it sheds further light on the the uncanny Charles Portis, all the better; you may have heard the Coen brothers are remaking his True Grit, which if you’ve never read it (and especially if you’ve never even wanted to read it, because of the movie version starring John Wayne), you should find a copy this weekend and get busy. This is one of the great American novels of the twentieth century–a virtuoso exercise in authorial voice, and a phenomenal page-turner to book.
