I definitely agree with Rachel Deahl’s sense of how these days, more established (if not bestselling) authors are finding good homes with indie publishers. This is certainly something we’re seeing here at Agate, both in terms of what we’re publishing and in terms of what we’re being pitched by agents and by authors themselves. Lots of good stuff in this article, with some detailed information by indie stalwarts like Munro Magruder of NWL, Johnny Temple of Akashic, and many more. For my part, I always particularly enjoy working with veteran authors who have an unvarnished sense of how “big six” publishing works these days. They tend to be more acutely appreciative, I think, of the greater attention and engagement they experience in working with an indie press.
